The purpose of the Child Care Food Program is to improve the health and nutrition of children in the program while promoting the development of good eating habits and the furtherance of nutrition education.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reimburses participating childcare centers and family childcare homes for the meals served, not for individual foods.

A meal is reimbursable if it contains foods in the amounts outlined in the CCFP meal patterns based on the following factors:

  • Nutrient content.

  • Customary function in a meal.

  • Whether they meet regulations governing child nutrition programs.

  • Whether they meet the Food and Drug Administration’s standards of identity.

  • Directly Operated Centers
In the centers that are directly operated by Childhood Development Services, the funds are used to offset the cost of meals catered from the local school board. The funds also purchase supplies and nutritious mid-day snacks.

Family Childcare Homes & Unaffiliated Childcare Centers
In Family Childcare Homes, providers receive a monthly reimbursement based on the number of meals served and the economic status of the area. As the sponsor or the childcare food program, CDS reviews menus, calculates reimbursements, then forwards a claim to the State of Florida Department of Health for payment.
